A left hip injury continues to plague world No. 2 Maria Sharapova, who has dropped out of next week’s Bank of the West Classic at Stanford University.
Tournament director Kim Hall said Monday that organizers “are disappointed for our fans,” adding that “unfortunately injuries are a part of the sport,” the Associated Press reports.
Sharapova said she strained her hip during her 6-3, 6-4 loss to 131st-ranked Michelle Larcher de Brito in the
second round of Wimbledon. In the wake of that embarrassing loss and a continuing slump in majors, Sharapova announced Saturday that she has split with coach Thomas Hogstedt and hired Jimmy Connors.
