The Russian came out on top in one of the best matches at a major in 2017 as she fought her way past her Romanian opponent to win 6-4 4-6 6-3 and reach the second round.
Making her first appearance at a Slam since the Australian Open in 2016 – where she tested positive for meldonium – the 30-year-old thumped down 60 winners as well as making 64 unforced errors in a hugely entertaining contest.
After such a long period away from the game and having suffered with injury since making her return in April, it was perhaps no surprise to see her overwhelmed at the end of the match and she could not fight back the tears.
