Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz has won his semi-final against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, telling fans that he believes he ‘can beat Djokovic’ at Wimbledon’s highly-anticipated men’s final on Sunday.
The eyes of the world were on Centre Court this evening as Alcaraz, the world number one, gunned for a place in the grand slam final in front of a star-studded crowd, including the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker, Columbian singer Shakira.
The 20-year-old tennis star turned out to be too good for the Russian player who despite continuing a solid fight in the third set, sealed a stunning 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory, making him the youngest man to reach the final since fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in 2006.
The Spanish hunk’s victory spared Wimbledon chiefs the uncomfortable situation of the Princess of Wales shaking hands with a player from Russia, after they were banned from the Championships last year due to the war in Ukraine.
When asked whether he was nervous to meet Djokovic – the reigning champion 16 years his senior – the brazen player said ‘it’s not time to be afraid’. The two men previously came head-to-head at the French Open semi-finals where Alcaraz suffered cramping caused by nerves.
