Tennis champ Rafael Nadal wants you to relax—the Mediterranean way. The two-time Olympic gold medalist doubled up with Meliá Hotels International to form ZEL, which just opened its first location on June 28. The
beachside oasis, which rests near the white sand of Palma Nova Beach in Nadal’s native Mallorca, Spain, was specifically designed to “embrace the ‘fiesta and siesta’ concepts that are essential to the Mediterranean lifestyle,” according to a recent press release. In line with that goal, serene nature-inspired decor abounds and a lengthy list of activities available to guests includes concerts, fitness programs, and island excursions curated by Nadal.

Álvaro and Adriana Sans of ASAH studio helmed the hotel’s renovation and interior design, filling the space with lots of wood, woven textiles, and colors naturally found near the water. “The sea is always present in all places,
and it’s what guests seek in the Mediterranean,” Alvaro Sans told AD via email. Throughout the resort, many of the ceilings are clad in a sandy-hued burlap-like textile topped with thin wood beams, adding an extra dose of warmth.
